Ukraine is working on developing new mines that will use artificial intelligence to “decide” for themselves who to detonate. This was announced in Odesa during the Black Sea Security Forum by the acting Minister of Digital Transformation, Oleksandr Borniakov.

Key takeaways:

  • Ukraine is actively developing new AI-powered mines that will automatically identify potential threats and make decisions regarding the activation of the explosive device.
  • The next generation of intelligent mines will be capable of identifying different categories of individuals, determining whether to trigger the explosive device based on personal characteristics.

AI-Powered Mines: A New Development from Ukraine

According to him, the Ministry of Digital Transformation is involved in the creation of next-generation mines, which will integrate artificial intelligence. The plan is for this AI to automatically determine who is approaching the mine and whether to activate the explosive device.

As the official noted, AI will be responsible for the process, identifying targets. This identification will go beyond a simple “friend or foe” assessment; it will determine who exactly is approaching the device – a child, an adult, a civilian, a military person, or an armed individual, and so on.

For instance, if the artificial intelligence detects someone walking through a minefield, and this person is shorter than 1 meter, the mine will not detonate because the AI understands it’s a child. Alternatively, if a flak jacket displays “UN,” the mine will also not activate. Or, if the person is not carrying any metallic objects, it will also not trigger, according to the AI’s assessment… I believe this could function autonomously.
