When an entrepreneur performs their job poorly, customers punish them, and the market dismisses them.
They cannot blame external factors, difficulties, weather, war, taxes, or borders. The consumer is a ruthless judge and executioner, unconcerned with the entrepreneur’s problems. Moreover, the entrepreneur’s very function is to solve problems. External factors are merely the input data they must consider.
An entrepreneur always receives feedback in the form of profits or losses, compelling them to improve or exit the market.
This significantly distinguishes entrepreneurs from civil servants, who have no connection to reality. A civil servant can distance themselves from a problem (even one they created themselves) and adopt an observer’s stance, attributing their own inefficiency or lack of results to external factors—weather, Putin, the West, Poles, Ukrainians, etc. Most importantly, they are free from the risk of being dismissed by customers, as they simply have none. No one votes with their hryvnia for the quality of public services; funds are collected irrespective of outcomes. So why bother?
For 21 days now, the borders with Poland have been blocked, yet we have seen no responsible individuals held accountable or dismissed for this collapse. Instead, we have heard numerous conspiracy theories and explanations involving external causes.
