Farmers in the Mykolaiv region have practically finished harvesting early grains, legumes, and rapeseed, achieving one of the most bountiful harvests in recent years. According to the agricultural development department of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, the harvest was gathered from 657 thousand hectares, with a gross grain yield exceeding 2.3 million tons at an average yield of 3.55 tons per hectare.

The primary component of the yield is wheat — approximately 1.6 million tons with an average yield of 3.78 tons per hectare. Nearly 600 thousand tons of barley were harvested with a yield of 3.41 tons per hectare, and over 100 thousand tons of peas with a yield of 2.17 tons per hectare. Additionally, farmers in the region obtained more than 300 thousand tons of rapeseed.

Compared to the previous year, the total yield of early grains in the Mykolaiv region has increased by almost 400 thousand tons, and rapeseed by 30 thousand tons. Local authorities describe this year’s results as among the best for Southern Ukraine in many years.

However, the abundant harvest is accompanied by a sharp decline in purchasing prices. At the beginning of the harvest, wheat and barley were bought for approximately 9-11 thousand UAH/ton, whereas now the prices have dropped to 5-7 thousand UAH/ton. The main challenge for farmers remains the restricted access to traditional sales channels.

Due to Russian attacks on port infrastructure and damage to terminals, the capacity for receiving and exporting grain has significantly reduced. Consequently, the substantial supply of the new harvest is putting pressure on domestic prices, while farmers in the Mykolaiv region are unable to sell their grain at a favorable price.
