Following today’s proceedings, Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko, who personally joined the prosecution team, announced this update, as reported by UNN.
We have moved to the stage of examining the accused. Today, with the court’s permission, we had the opportunity to ask the defendant several questions. The next hearing will occur tomorrow, where we anticipate his full interrogation.
– stated the Prosecutor General.
Kravchenko also noted that the defendant lied during evidence review, as he had done throughout the pre-trial investigation.
We reiterate that his intent was specifically to murder a minor
– emphasized Kravchenko.
Case Background
As clarified by the Prosecutor General, during today’s hearing, all material evidence in the case against Kosov was reviewed.
Specifically, the court heard testimony from a forensic expert, who confirmed that the victim’s death resulted from a glass shard causing a critical neck injury.
Kravchenko further informed the court that, according to witness accounts, the defendant reached toward the area where he carried his firearm, threatening bystanders.
Additionally, Kravchenko questioned Kosov about whether he had urged the victim to join the military. Kosov declined to confirm such claims.
Further Details
On April 8, 2024, Kosov was formally charged with the deliberate killing of the teenager. Investigators determined the incident occurred at the upper funicular station near the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and St. Michael’s Monastery. While intoxicated, Kosov reportedly harassed a group of teenagers, including Maxim Maternukhin. He pushed the 16-year-old, whose subsequent fall led to fatal injuries.

On April 9, 2024, Kyiv’s Pechersk Court ordered Kosov’s detention for 60 days without bail. This measure has since been extended multiple times, with the defendant currently held in pre-trial detention.
By May 5, 2024, the SBI finalized its investigation and transferred case materials to the defense for review.
On May 29, the indictment was submitted to Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi District Court. Investigators concluded the minor’s murder was motivated by hooliganism, a crime punishable by life imprisonment.
Kyiv’s court extended Kosov’s detention without bail until October 11, 2024.
