The new generation Ukrainian chamber ensemble, Lyatoshynsky Trio, made its debut during the celebratory opening of the Salzburg Festival, Fest zur Festspieleröffnung. This was reported by Ukrinform, citing the ensemble’s manager, Yulia Ostroverkhova. The Lyatoshynsky Trio comprises Mykhailo Zakharov (violin), Susanna Chambellan (cello), and Artem Yasynskyi (piano). They presented two distinct programs, showcasing a broad artistic spectrum – from European modernist compositions to Romantic classics and tango nuevo. According to the Lyatoshynsky Trio’s manager, the first concert featured works by Arvo Pärt, György Kurtág, and Borys Lyatoshynsky. This year, György Kurtág, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday, was a central figure in the festival’s lineup. For the Ukrainian ensemble, “it was a great honor to present his music alongside Borys Lyatoshynsky’s Second Piano Trio, continuing our mission to introduce Ukrainian chamber music to a global audience.” The second program united two masterpieces of world chamber music: Johannes Brahms’ First Piano Trio and Astor Piazzolla’s Las Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas. Ostroverkhova highlighted that the Lyatoshynsky Trio’s debut in the official festival opening program was a significant event, not only for the ensemble but also for the international presence of Ukrainian academic music. “The performance of Borys Lyatoshynsky’s Second Piano Trio on the stage of the Salzburg Festival serves as further testament that Ukrainian musical heritage is increasingly establishing itself within the European concert canon,” she stated. As is known, the Lyatoshynsky Trio was founded in 2019. The collective consistently introduces Ukrainian chamber music to the world, blending it with masterpieces of European classical music and offering a fresh perspective on shared cultural heritage. The ensemble has performed at the Wiener Konzerthaus, Opéra Comique in Paris, the National Philharmonic of Ukraine, and numerous international festivals across Europe. Their debut album, featuring Borys Lyatoshynsky’s chamber music and released in 2020, was broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
