Information has emerged that the Meta AI application for Ray-Ban smart glasses is capable of facial recognition and can identify users through images and videos captured by these devices.

Main points:

  • The Meta AI app for Ray-Ban smart glasses is designed for facial recognition and can identify users from photos and videos.
  • The new hidden feature NameTag processes facial images and can alert about the presence of familiar people.

Meta AI for Ray-Ban smart glasses will have a new hidden feature

This was reported by WIRED (via 9to5google), which conducted a detailed analysis of the Meta AI application and discovered a hidden, not yet released feature called NameTag.

It can recognize faces captured by the glasses, process them, and notify the user about the presence of familiar individuals. According to the report, the new feature has been under development through several updates this year.

Meta AI functions as a companion app, linking smartphone capabilities with Ray-Ban, granting the glasses internet access and data processing via the company’s servers.

Ray-Ban devices do not operate without this application, meaning the recognition feature is effectively integrated into all devices connected to the smart glasses.

According to WIRED, Meta retains recognized data on user devices after “face prints” are downloaded from the company’s servers.

In April, Meta stated it was only “considering” the possibility of implementing such technology. Meanwhile, the code suggests that the foundation for NameTag might have appeared as early as January. Theoretically, even users who haven’t updated the app since then could possess this hidden functionality.

Based on the Meta AI code, NameTag is powered by three artificial intelligence models: one identifies faces, another adjusts their position in the image, and the third converts the obtained data into biometric information.

Currently, this feature is not active, and Meta emphasizes that there is no final decision regarding its launch yet. The company states that if NameTag is implemented, it will be introduced “with full transparency.” Meta also asserted that it does not create a centralized facial database.
